As mentioned by Andreas Olsson, I can confirm that commenting out the
[Printers] section in smb.conf allowed smbd to start correctly on my
system (Jaunty 64bit).

I can confirm this too on ubuntu 9.0.4 (64bit) with all updates (at time
of writing)
'sudo /etc/init.d/samba start' gives no error.
Output from log.smdb:

Hi also had this problem after upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy.
I already had the java packages installed and working prior to the
upgrade.

I have noticed that this has been reported previously in specific
applications, however I'm finding that this is happening in all
applications constantly.
Any time a dialog is called from a program, it is opened behind the
parent, like a pop-under.
Examples include Firefox,
Further investigation has found that this is a Beryl issue. as going
back to Metacity resolves the issue.
