Having the same problem also using Asus P5E WS PRO.
I did an upgrade from feisty to hardy and since that moment i am not able to
use the cdrom / dvd anymore

At this moment my system is very from stable. i installed 8.0.4 lately
but the system keeps on crashing or hangs.
