It still doesn't work, the plugin now shows up in Chrome and Firefox
settings, but the Flash area is blank.

I managed to make nspluginwrapper work by installing:
sudo apt-get install libnss3:i386
One can get more info abut the error with -v option (verbose):
sudo nspluginwrapper -v -i /usr/lib/flashplugin-
installer/libflashplayer.so
