I had the same issue - post number 14 here fixed it, commenting out the
lines like he said:
I've opened /etc/pulse/default.pa and commented 4 lines.
Before:
### Automatically load driver modules depending on the hardware available
.ifexists module-udev-detect.so
load-module module-udev-detect
I can confirm that it detects my usb card fine and i can successfully
compile the em2880 driver against the kernel.

yes as far as i know
its not a perfect fix but the trade-off for me was worth it as i had to
keep getting up to move the mouse and press a key every 10 minutes
whilst watching tv with my tv tuner card

iI had the same problem, screen blanking even with screensaver set to
off. Running gutsy, fglrx driver ati x1600pro. i fixed it by doing
something i read in another post, which involved doing the following:
$ sudo mv /usr/bin/gnome-screensaver /usr/bin/gnome-screensaver-actual
$ sudo cat
