Yesterday I updated from the xorg-edgers ppa and the bug seems to be gone now. I even set the semaphore parameter to 0, which was a sure way to trigger this problem, and now there are no error messages about GPU hangs in dmesg. This Phoronix article also suggests that this problem was fixed in
