I found one problem.
The default user profile for me, as the only user, did not include sound
card privileges.
I unlocked the settings and checked the box, then re-booted the
computer. I still only have sound in Audacity, but the error messages
have changed.

One of my sentences was cut off.
Here is a screen shot of Sound Preferences after hitting the test green
checkmark.
Only audacity will play sound.
