I can also confirm this bug, I get pretty much the same command line
output as in the description.
I think those UTF-8 errors must be gnome-ppp assuming that wvdial is
spitting out ASCII or UTF-8. I'll try modifying the source to
disconnect the log and see what happens.

Matej you can also install gnome-compiz-effects instead of messing
with the broken desktop-effects capplet. It'll be under
SystemPreferencesGL Desktop. I used alacarte
(SystemPreferencesMain Menu) to remove the desktop-effects capplet
from the preferences menu altogether.

Here's a patch that fixes this particular problem. It simply movies
registering the signal handlers for the check boxes until after they are
filled with the settings read from gconf. This was causing the checkbox
to tick when cube was already on, causing it to think that you turned on

I found that the only bold font that works is FreeSans's bold. Sans's
Bold Italic displays the Japanese characters fine.
Also the Window List's font doesn't show Japanese characters if
Application Font is set to Sans Regular (And Nimbus regular) Changing
the font to the italic version fixes it.
The bugs seem to have disappeared. I guess the bug should be marked as
invalid.
