xdg-open is a shell script which calls various url handlers depending on
which desktop environment it detects (Gnome, KDE etc).
I suspect the problem is that you have
x-scheme-handler/file=x-scheme-handler/file=exo-file-manager.desktop
in your mime types config.

Binary package hint: update-manager
When a package is built from source and installed, update-manager by
default replaces the (presumably customized) package by the same version
binary package.
This is called a distribution update.
An installed package should by default

gcc (see above) and put working binaries in the repos?

If compiled with gcc-4.1, everything works fine, but with gcc-4.4 same
