discernible problems while working, fingers crossed.

Unfortunately the Problem remains. I've checked with the linux-2.6.27-2
image, and the outpit changed a bit, but not in the interesting part:
$ cat /proc/acpi/processor/CPU0/power
active state: C0
max_cstate: C8
bus master activity:
maximum allowed latency: 16000 usec

The Live CD uses the same correct/sensible resolutions for the given CRT in GDM
and Metacity. At least the autoprobeing does the right thing now.
When intrepid is out I'll update and try a dpkg-reconfigure on the affected box.
Thank you so far.

I'd like to have this bug reopend, as the namly problem occurs again with the
1:0.16.3-10 version. It got fixed _again_ in the -13 revision.(According to
Ubuntu and Debian changelogs.)
That causes it to be broken again with gutsy.
An update to hardy is not a sensible option yet. A backported fix

I' m happy to correct myself a bit: The fan now stops again if the temprature
drops enough (below 33°C).
And for the C-Sates, well here are the logs:

I've tested it, but it's not better than a 2.6.22 with a hacked DSDT.
The fan acts now resonable (doesn't start working insanly for ever once after
the temprature dropped below 35°C) out of the box but it still never stops
totally, as it did with a 2.6.17.
And the all C states above 0 are still
Hi, an easier way to get more current alsa than 1.0.14 are the backport modules.
At least for gutsy it should work to install the linux-backports-modules
package and reboot once.
That way it starts working on an Inspiron 1521.
(Tested only with internal speakers and line-out though.)
Good luck!
I have the same symptoms on an Ubuntu Gutsy installation.
GDM starts in a low resolution, after login the resolution gets changed to a
higher one.
But I have the feeling that in both times, the xorg.conf is actually ignored.
I come to this suspection based on the following:
After login there is

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic
As part of a lengthy quest for a laptop fan that should stop turning I found
out that there is something cheesy about the CPU power states. According to
$ cat /proc/acpi/processor/CPU0/power
active state:C0
I have also problems on a L3000D with a fan that shows erratic behavior.
Yet different from yours. But could you please post the content of
/proc/acpi/processor/CPU0/power in bug #157407 as I'm investigating
several ACPI problems that became much more appearant with 2.6.22.
And a possible fix to

I don't have scim installed, only scim_qtimm and skim. Removing scim_qtimm
solves the problem in my case, but this is a really dirty workaround, since

It's still that way.

it via its up down arrows or enter directly the value into it, it resets
to zero.

Unfortunately I'm working on an i386 installation now. Therefore I can no
longer give feedback on this problem.
(on i386 it doesn't occure)
If I should get in the position to test it I'll do it.
Thank you for your time.
