Sorry for answering this late.
1) The issue of xmodmap.conf not being loaded has disappeared.
2) The bug is now reduced to an error in the following line of
/etc/xmodmap.conf :
keycode 116 = Multi_key Multi_key Multi_key Multi_key Multi_key
Multi_key
To fix this issue permanently it is enough

Hi,
Dist-upgrade to Intrepid went smooth, and my wireless pcmcia card works
fine under the new kernel 2.6.27-7-generic. In my case the problem was
already solved with kernel 2.6.24-21.

Having read appropriate documentation such as
http://people.freedesktop.org/~hughsient/quirk/quirk-keymap-index.html
I could fix my problem.
As I understand, it seems that the HAL database needs to be
completed/corrected, at least for some devices. The workaround in my
case is described below.
Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: xorg
Release:8.10
xorg: 1:7.4~5ubuntu3
keyboard: Logitech UltraX Y-BL49
After upgrade from hardy to intrepid (via update-manager -c -d), the
Down key is defined as Multi_key by xmodmap.
Manually feeding a correct xmodmap.conf to xmodmap solves

After system update (kernel upgraded to 2.6.24-21-generic) my wireless
card with atheros chipset now works as well as with 2.6.24-19-generic.
Kernel 2.6.24-20 still fail to detect it for some reason.

The problem is not solved in my case. The card is not detected by

Martin: 'It's quite obvious what the problem is though, /var/run/screen
wasn't created at install time... right?'
Not so obvious to me. The error message shows that screen tries to
create this directory, but simply can't. Looks very similar to bug
#13143, which was supposed to be solved in Hoary.
No Visual Effects. I am running xfce, with the defaults parameters.

It seems that today's upgrade of libpoppler2 ( from 0.6-0 to 0.6.2-1)
solved the problem for me.

Thank you for reporting this bug. I can confirm this behaviour on my
machine (gutsy x86, evince 2.20.1 ). Though it is annoying I would
consider it as low priority.

Thank you for reporting this bug. Could you please give some details ?
Knowing the release of Ubuntu and the version of 'screen' you are using
may be very helpful. Also, can you run 'sudo screen' without problems ?

Can't run
I confirm this behaviour on a PCG-FX501, with a fresh install of
xubuntu-gutsy (2.6.22-14-generic):
