I had this continue trashing my new partition at every reboot and I
couldn't track the cause ...
One idea/workaround with the UUID:
- have cryptsetup allow only files or UUIDs instead of devices until
UUID support is in the swap filesystem, e.g.:
partition ->
"containing" ext3 fil
Hardware upgrade (new PC) seemed to solve the problem.

I got your email, Maxei, and I am replying here:
I reported the original bug (#366884). Since then I have upgraded my
hardware (quad-core amd64), and used a generic kernel instead of linux-
kernel-rt. The problem disappeared, but then again, I am not doing
anything professional, etc.

1. remove /etc/init/rsyslog* for uninstall to work
2. restart
3. install rsyslog
Now, rsyslog installs and uninstalls without problems.

Also had dpkg hanging on rsyslog during upgrades.
I finally removed /etc/init/rsyslog* files and purged the package.
Trying to reinstall gives me the following trace:
$sudo strace -f dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/rsyslog_4.2.0-2ubuntu4_i386.deb
...
[pid 11377] socket(PF_FILE, SOCK_STREAM, 0)
I have:
devicekit-disks 006-0ubuntu4
and the all the patches until *now* and I still have the problem after a
restart.
The crash file also contains ' devicekit-disks 006-0ubuntu4', just to be
sure. (I was sent to this page by apport).
As a result (I think) I keep on getting respawn
Boots up fine now.

This is while trying to get into rescue mode.
It reacts to Alt-Ctl-Del, gets dhcp lease, reacts to pings but no sshd.
kern.log doesn't seem to get written to disk.
sshd works in 2.6.31-1 of course, so it isn't a fir
This isn't related to gdm or X. I can't even get it to boot with
'single' on command line for maintenance mode. If anyone has an idea on
how to debug this - I'm willing to help. Please note that '2.6.31-3-rt'

bug present in /etc/gdm/Xsession, installed from package gdm-2.20.7.
Reason: $(ls $1) is used, which adds ansi color escape sequences
Fix1: change "ls" to "/bin/ls" to ignore the bash/sh alias (in
/etc/gdm/Xsession)
Fix2: use run-parts with --list instead of defining a run_p
Benjamin's patch isn't in resolvconf trunk, I applied it locally and
tested it with: vpnc + resolvconf + dnsmasq.
The patch now has an ugly workaround to work with dnsmasq also and works
with more interfaces.

If the /etc/resolv.conf did not contain a message about it being
generated and not to be edited, then it most likely wasn't a link to
/etc/resolvconf/run/resolv.conf as it should have been and so it wasn't
managed by resolv.conf.

I couldn't reproduce the error on hardy using vpnc + resolvconf +
dnsmasq(on and off). But I have wicd instead of NetworkManager, but that
shouldn't affect resolvconf functionality.

Problem had some obscure config problem - starting/stopping dnsmasq
correctly removes the lo.dnsmasq from the resolvconf/run/interfaces
