If this helps, I can prevent it from crashing if I use GTK_DEBUG=no-
pixel-cache OR GDK_RENDERING=recording with some caveats.
GDK_RENDERING=recording works but has lots of rendering artifacts.
GDK_RENDERING=image does not crash but Passwords/Login does not render.

Wow I'm not alone! Happens with the same hardware. Dell 5520 with a
TB16 dock. After login it now goes through up to 6 cycles of blank to
normal screens before it stabilizes after 30-60 seconds. It's connected

between Redhat5/6 boxes that have the same UID but different user names.
Added fun is that some of the conflicting UIDs are from LDAP and some

I'm getting something that sounds a lot like this bug in 12.04 LTS Server - I
have a dual interface home server with 2 nics. ssh, xinetd, and
isc-dhcp-server all fail to work correctly on boot and need to be restarted.
All 3 also have custom configurations for binding to one nic or the other.
This is happening to me also. Doing the steps in #20 makes no
difference.
Ubuntu proxy settings are set to auto-detect, configuration URL empty.
Case 1: Home where I don't have a proxy - Empathy works as expected.
Case 2: Work WITH (squid) proxy - Empathy cannot sign in "no reason specified"

I just want to add a "I also think this sucks" to this thread. I
commonly (used to) click on the icon to bring it to the front to check
status (say it's a terminal or mail app), then click again to put it
away again. Really annoying to have to navigate to move/focus/minimize
every time. I though
