I don't know the ins and outs of HDMI hotplugging with pulseaudio, but I can suggest a workaround - Create a file named /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-hdmi.conf with the following line: blacklist snd_hda_codec_hdmi Then, run: sudo depmod -a sudo modprobe -r snd_hda_codec_hdmi The HDMI audio driver
