Same here. Using Intrepid and evince only displays a blank page. I don't
get any warnings as stecklum did though.

I am on Intrepid 8.10 and still cannot see eps. All I get is

Well, in Hardy amd64 with evince 2.21.90-0ubuntu1 I get cute black
frames around the place where the image should be, but nothing else.

Still there in evince 2.20.0, Gutsy Beta (AMD64) with all updates until 6th of
October.
This is really annoying, as working with Latex means that you deal very much
with .dvi files...

okay, if i latex this .tex file i can open the dvi with kdvi seeing the
picture, evince doesn't show that. when i do dvipdfm evince displays the
picture in the resulting pdf file.
