The shifted output is a problem of the Brother driver,m it does not
appear in any of the PostScript files which you have attached. At Ubuntu
we cannot do anything against it. Brother has to fix the driver.
The character substitution problem is caused by Poppler, this is fixed
in the cups-filters

Can you run the following command in a terminal window:
cp /etc/cups/ppd/dbwcrrr.ppd ~
Then edit dbwcrrr.ppd in your home directory, replacing
*cupsFilter:application/vnd.cups-postscript 0
/usr/Brother/Printer/hl4070cdw/cupswrapper/brlpdwrapper_hl4070cdw
by
*cupsFilter:
/etc/cups/ppd/dbwcrrr.ppd
The problem appears on all the printers, it seems to be ppd independent.

I have checked the files. Page size and positioning of the text is
identical and OK in all files. If there are shifts on the printer it is
a bug in Brother's driver. The output of Poppler's pdftops filter shows
indeed wrong character. Each character is replaced by the character

Did the problem occur already when you installed Ubuntu 12.04 for the
first time? Or was it caused by the transition from cups-filters
1.0.17-0bzr0.1 to 1.0.18-0ubuntu0.1?
Please follow the instructions of the sections CUPS error_log and

I don't know if the problem was there from the beginning, I just found
it last Friday, it was the first time I tried to print text files on
12.04.
Attached is the error_log for the following sequence of commands:
