This bug is a regression starting with Ubuntu 11.10. In Ubuntu 11.04
everything worked just fine. I believe this bug is actually a pulse
audio bug. PA doesn't change the alsa volume which is at maximum. The

Unfortunately I don't remember but I've found that it's related to Asus
Xonar. Enabling integrated audio in BIOS and using it as a default
output results in a correct volume at startup. I've bought that Xonar
not that long time ago (I forgot, maybe a year or so) but I'm using
