I don't have mplayer installed, but got the same problem, affecting,
vlc, totem, and flash videos. the solution was to unselect my graphic
card as an audio device, like Daniel's link says.

After some event (Ubuntu or Windows 7 update), my laptop began to suffer from
this problem. It affects *all* media players (mplayer, Flash player, ...).
I think it is related to the misidentification of a video card as a sound card.
