Same initial panic -- this time, though, I can see other kernel traces
being generated -- warn_slowpath_common being the last one, with a
'Watchdog detected hard LOCKUP on cpu 2'.
I cannot, anymore, log into Unity, KDE, or XFCE. I am thinking of giving
up reinstalling.

Nope, cannot uninstall, cannot downgrade, cannot upgrade cgroup-bin. Any
operations on it (even with --force-all) results in a kernel panic. Will
now try a previous kernel (the last 3.4 on Quantal).
