My driver is the default, non-proprietary ati/amd driver, installed from
12.04 and updated through update manager. The details section of system
settings gives me an unknown for driver. My card is a [Radeon HD 6290].

Hi Zachary. We did have a previous report of what may be the issue that
you are seeing, bug 998865, but that seemed to have been a temporary
condition and has since been resolved outside of Software Center.
As per bug 998865, is there any chance you could attach a video of the
