I noticed that the described behavior is intermittent, and does not only
pertain to gufw (which, when started from the command line, works just
fine).
I found the same behavior also with Software Center, not bringing up the
auth dialog when clicking on "Install" to install a new piece o

Could you run gufw from the Terminal? With this command:
gufw
And report here the exit.
