Sorry for the delay responding.
Guest seems to work with Unity 3D - echo $DESKTOP_SESSION gives ubuntu
Normal login wont work with Unity 3D (no launcher etc) but works fine
with Unity 2D.

Also, please try removing the bleeding edge nvidia driver and installing an
ubuntu-supported version by running:

Michael, could you please:
1. Log into a virtual terminal: Ctrl+Alt+F1
2. Run: unity --reset
3. Run: sudo restart lightdm
Does that help?
If not then, please log in to a virtual terminal again and run:
pidof compiz
Does it show any result?
