Sorry about the long delay. Here are some things that have become more
obvious since the original incident:
1. The machine I was using seems to have a hardware problem that causes
it to freeze. I don't believe that has anything to do with Ubuntu. The
problem appeared around the same time as
1) I imagine (from your log) that you install Eclipse/JDK from the
repository.
On that way, you must install Eclipse Updates as a root user. Did you
run the Install/Update as a Eclipse 'sudo' user ?
2) I have encountered several problems working on repository-based Eclipse.

Thank you. I will hopefully try those tomorrow. There is definitely a
problem with privileges and I did use the repository version. I think
my speculation that the screen saver was involved is way off. I'll let
you know about any results I have,
