I solved this for Totem Movie Player by doing this, Open your terminal , type gstreamer-properties and under Video Tab ,under Video Plugin choose X Window Syste, (No Xv). Now movies get played in Totem. But in other players like VLC, still it not playing and I tried searching in the options but

I am on Edgy but i have exactly the same problem but only in vlc. I discover something funny with this bug. If you open two instance of vlc by rapidly clicking 4 time on the vidéo icon it opens two instance of vlc :-) but what's really fun is that one of the two works perfectly. No black screen
