This bug report was before Hardy. On Hardy speakers work fine. I'll test
Jaunty later and come back with that info.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:
1) If you are comfortable
I found a packed installed called oss-linux. I removed that and now the
sound works. Probably I installed it some time ago when trying to
resolve the missing sound. This brings out a issue with updating Ubuntu
- you are not sure it will fix things if you have messed about - and it
still seems ther
I tried intrepid alpha, but it hangs after the green fading starts. I
also tried the 8.04.1 LiveCD, and with that the sound works. If fact, it
might have worked just after upgrading to hardy heron as well, but only
until reboot. How come it works off the LiveCD but not when the system
is installed?
Would it be possible to test this bug on Intrepid using the Alpha 3
LiveCD? The download is available here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha3. This would greatly
assist ensuring that the bug has in fact been fixed. Thanks!

Reinstalled alsa. Now I get slightly further, but still not all the way:

I have the same problem on a Fujitsu Siemens C1410 running Feisty. I can
add that when listening through headphones there is quite a high level
of background noice which should not be there.
