1048743 was marked as a dupe. if this fix truly is a fix, then, 1048743
is not a dupe as i have the updated package and problem persists, both
with add-apt-repository and synaptic.

I can confirm that this patch has fixed the problem for me.

To manage notifications
+1 from the release team, the fix looks reasonable and the use of
"Unknown" won't actually cause any UI change as these would currently
crash. Go ahead with the upload once cleared with translations and doc.
