** Description changed:

There are laptops from Hewlett-Packard laptops that HP 3D Driveguard
(AKA "HP Mobile Data Protection System 3D" and "ProtectSmart Hard Drive
Protection"), an active hard-drive protection technology utilising an
  accelerometers as a free-fall sensor.

In order to use this technology there needs to be a piece of simple software
that does the parking of the disc depending on the sensor input. An example
code for such a software for HP laptops is included in the kernel docs:
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/Documentation/laptops/hpfall.c
This software is what I would like to see packages and included in the
official repository just like the one for Thinkpads ("hdapsd").

(P.S.: someone created a PPA for previous Ubuntu versions:
  http://blog.pcode.nl/2009/09/19/hp-3d-driveguard-on-ubuntu-karmic/ , it
still might work but the point here is to make the make it just as easy
to enable the hard-drive protection for laptops from HP as from IBM)
