Found
on the workstation where it did'nt print, the eth0 interface was
incorrectly configurated. The configuration is manual, not via DHCP. The
mask was 255.255.255.255 instead of required 255.255.255.0
Everything worked well (Internet access, ping, etc. etc) except ethernet
printing to this
re-testing
-
1. installed new, fresch 12.04 64 bit from scratch on IBM T61p laptop
2. installed HP Laserjet 2100 network printer with default Foomatic/pxlmono
(en) recommended diver
3. printing test page --> OK
4. switched to WiFi link, disconnecting eth0 cable
5. re-printing ---> OK
sorry, not ended...
I did some more testing with this newly installed 12.04 test IBM T61p
notebook.
after the installation, it printed without problems.
When I activated the "print server" (activated shared printers, publish
printers on this computer etc. in the menu) it stopped to print.

Can you try if a different printer driver triggers the same problem?
Go to system-config-printer (System -> Administration -> Printing in GNOME
classic, Gear icon at the upper right of the screen -> Printers in Unity),
right click your Printer and select Properties > click Change... nex
** Package changed: ubuntu => hplip (Ubuntu)
