The same thing happens to me with xchat. It uses the systray mechanism,
not the indicator menu. It shows up and works at first, but then
appears to lose focus and disappear when I click anywhere on the unity
panel. If the panel is transparent, I can see a blurred icon behind it,

I can confirm this bug.
On my desktop I have skype (4.0.0.8-1), davmail (3.9.6-1843-1) and
empathy (3.4.2.3-0ubuntu1) get started automatically after login. All
three has a notification icon on the top panel, they are responding

1) Download and install Skype 4.0.0.8-1 from www.skype.com
2) Install Remmina desktop client using Synaptic
3) Start skype, notification icon appears on the top panel.
4) Start Remmina
Expected result: both Remmina notification icon and Skype icon appear

I have downloaded Skype 4.0 from skype web site, not installed it from
repository because repository contains old version of Skype. I assume that by
default Skype is using systray for displaying messages. I don't have any
unity-skype integration packages installed. I don't understand whic

the mouse to the right item (without clicking) in the launcher does the
adjacent menu opened?

I run unity which has a horizontal panel on the top of the screen. The panel
has an area for notifications. I don't know if it is ystray icon or unity
styled indicator, I guess it is what comes by default when you install a new
system because I have this problem on multiple computers.

the old-style systray then its a known issue that systray disappears for
people. but if its the indicator then I believe the issue is with skype.
