I'm facing the same bug on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32 bits.
I'm not able to run a console within the desktop. The desktop crashes.
I noticed that no xorg.conf solves the problem concerning use of konsole by
example.
I'm running kernel version 3.2.0-48 with gnome-shell

There is NO onboard graphics card on this mother board.
lspci I posted shows this.
I discovered the problem was compiz. After disabling compiz the crashes stopped.
I am still running fluxbox with two monitors and I have full 3d support for
applications,
just not for the desktop.
I am still using
It seems to be an X related issue. I tried to use former kernel ( 3.2.0-45) and
the problem persists.
If I remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf, everything is working fine.
On my side i need compiz or at least 3D support such as OpenGL and i need an
option in xorg.conf option AllowSHMPixmaps true to use
you can use 3d support without using a 3d compositor for the desktop, this is
the setup I use.
I use fluxbox with two monitors, the Nvidia 660 and no 3d composition. My
applications still have full 3d acceleration.
The performance is actually better with a light weight like fluxbox and better

You could try that in regards to AllowSHMPixmaps

May I suggest: turn off onboard graphic from the BIOS. Then change the
quiet splash in grub to nomodeset. It resolved the issue with my
nvidia driver, otherwise I had unreadable screen on my desktop. Hope
that helps. Best...

I have used Ubuntu for many years, mostly as a server os. I also use it
on a netbook. I recently installed Ubuntu on my desktop and well I am
having a miserable experience.
So to start. It does not matter what nvidia driver I use, the system is

To manage notifications about this
Ok so I am running stable using fluxbox and proprietary nvidia driver.
However, no luck with unity or gnome, it crashes.
However,
I still get the call trace I posted above as well as the NVRM message,
that I previously posted. Any solutions?

You received this bug notification because you
I suspected the call trace was perhaps a frame buffer issues, being that
this is a uefi system and nvidia driver does not recommend a frame
buffer, so I have tried the kernel options,

vga=normal
vga=0
video=vesa:off
and various combinations thereof, to no avail.

I can't say much about the nvidia driver crashes, so this doesn't
directly address your question, but let me ask -
Have you tried running the open source nouveau driver, rather than
nvidia's? It has improved a lot, recently. I am not running a machine
with an nvidia card, right now, and I'm
I researched the nouveau driver and it is coming along nicely. But it is
simply not sufficient for what I need this machine to do. I would go
back to windows on this box before resorting to using nouveau, nothing
against nouveau.
However, I basically dumped gnome and unity, and am now using
Sorry about the typos above, and I meant desktop not laptop at the end,
thx, cooking and bug reporting do not mix to well.
I will also be looking for the appropriate place to address that call
trace as well. It is obviously has to do with the nvidia driver, but
that is on boot I believe before
