Public bug reported: Ubiquity doesn't fail gracefully on older computers with low RAM. PC's with 512 MB have problems with ubiquity's manual partitioner, or when Ubiquity is run on a system without a swap partition. Ubiquity should also check that the PC has enough RAM to install when running on the LiveCD, which mounts 200-300MB of files into unrecoverable RAM.
Fedora's anaconda graphical installer has a feature that prevents out- of-memory crashes from occuring, by having a configurable memory limit. Having a descriptive error for this common condition would mean that users trying Ubuntu for the first time would not be lost.
