Sorry, but with all updates applied, restarting Thunderbird and Gwibber,
absolutely nothing appears in the messages indicator, except for a
greyed out "cleanup notifications" entry.

We have recently changed the way applications talk to the Messaging
Menu. Please apply all updates and restart Thunderbird and Gwibber
manually. Then, they should show up in the menu again.
Note that not all applications have been ported to the new API yet. Only
Thunderbird, Gwibber, and Empathy s
