This issue still persists so close to release.
I had Chrome open with a few tabs, and again everything became
unbearably slow. After closing Chrome, things returned to normal.
How are you guys going to tackle / fix / improve this issue?

Hello, I think I found solution. In my case problem was in Chrome
extension called "Speed Dial". When I turned off this extension,
problem disappeared. Instead of this extension now I use SpeedDial2.
This problem I had also in Ubuntu 12.04.

I'm able to consistently replicate this behavior by having a number of
tabs open in Chrome, minimizing the browser then maximizing it. At that
point it freezes up and sends Xorg to 100% CPU usage.

This just now happens with Quantal Beta1, running Chromium. The hit on
the CPU by Xorg was even greater this time around (see attached
screenshot).

Please open a terminal and run "top -d1". Now reproduce the problem with
Chrome.
While the slowdown is occurring, does "top" show any process using very
high CPU?
