Public bug reported:

I've installed various versions of Kubuntu many times but recently
encountered a very strange bug.

I installed by mistake a copy of the i386 version of 12.04.1 on my
64-bit system running an Intel Q6600 @ 2.40GHz. I could type into the
login box, but once I got to the desktop, anything I typed into a
Konsole window took forever to appear on screen or did not appear at
all. I was also unable to perform normal activities with the mouse like
making the panel appear from auto-hide. It would appear briefly then
disappear again before I could do anything. I could use the mouse to
navigate around the screen, though tasks like moving windows were very
slow.

I searched in vain for an explanation for this phenomenon, one I have
never encountered in Kubuntu, or indeed in any Linux distribution so
far. I then realized that I had used an i386 installation CD and
thought perhaps it was an architecture mismatch. Indeed that seems to
be the case. I'm now typing this message on the same machine, and with
the same Logitech wireless keyboard that did not work before, after
having installed the amd64 version of Kubuntu 12.04.1 instead.

I tried using both a wired USB keyboard and a PS/2 keyboard and
encountered the same problem. I also had the problem where my root
partition was marked read-only because of a mismatch between between
local time and UTC. I ran fsck and remounted / and also synchronized
the hardware and system clocks. None of that resolved the keyboard
problem. I'm pretty sure it has to be an architecture-related issue as
this was the first time I tried installing an i386 version of the system
on this machine.

I've attached the output of lshw to this report. If you need more
details, I'll be happy to provide them.
