Thanks, I think one of my ubuntu friends has found a possible solution
to the problem. The modem may require an upgrade patch. See the link

Thanks for the very quick response. The modem is a SpeedStream 5360
connected at both the modem and computer by RJ45 plugs. No USB
connections involved, to the best of my knowledge.
