External Harddrive Mounted RW turns into RO

Well, I backed up another folder that was 4.2GB in size, and it worked
perfectly fine w/o this issue. So maybe it's the actual content of the
original folder that has issues?

Joseph,
I just now tried this again and indeed the issue still persists. The
folder to be backed up has 3.4GB of data, and the error happened about
halfway through. See screenshot attached.

Hey Joseph,
I haven't tried a backup on that device recently. I will try and let you
know.

Hi Rainer,
Its been a while since the last comment on this bug. I wanted to check
if you are still seeing this bug with the latest Quantal updates. If
so, I can start a kernel bisect.

I just tested 3.3.0-030300-generic_3.3.0-030300.201203182135_amd64 and
it has this issue.
Please see a screenshot attached that shows what keeps happening. It
does not happen with a specific file; it just happens not too long into
the copying process.

Can you test some of the earlier kernels, since v3.5-rc1 has the bug:
v3.4 final: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.4-quantal/
v3.3 final: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.3-precise/

I tested v3.5-rc1 and it had the problem, and also 3.5.0-14-generic

It would be helpful to know the last good kernel version and the first
kernel version that had this bug. Can you test some earlier kernels to
see if they have the bug, for example:
v3.5-rc1: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.5-rc1-quantal/
v3.5-rc4: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel
I don't normally pay attention to certain kernels when doing "normal"
day-to-day stuff, like backing up files. :)
On the other hand, I've noticed that prior when doing a fresh install of
Quantal before, the device would mount RW and stay mounted RW. Then,
after a few days of dist-upgrades, the dev
Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a
kernel version where you were not having this particular problem? This
will help determine if the problem you are seeing is the result of the
introduction of a regression, and when this regression was introduced.
