Micah you're wrong, mpd is playing the music and need access to audio
devices.
On a fresh feisty install I have:
$ id mpd
uid=110(mpd) gid=29(audio) groups=29(audio)
As Skott said, we need to know which Ubuntu version and which mpd
version you are using.
