Public bug reported:

This problem has been noted for a while now across multiple Ubuntu and Picard
versions up to the latest Quantal amd64 and current Picard 1.0-1 (same on
1.0+bzr1336-ppa6) and has been experienced on different machines.
During a multiple "Save" operation, Picard can slow down to a crawl, Picard
sometimes even freezing up completely for a short while (greyed out). The same
operations on the Windows version doesn't affect Picard at all, and the whole
applications remains very responsive.
So this is inherent to the Ubuntu version that seems to be badly implemented in
this respect.
