I agree with you in all points (however Empathy shouldn't start in
"normal"-mode if it is in unity, but thats another story/bug-report)

We've changed the way applications talk to the messaging menu (through a
new API called libmessaging-menu). Not all applications have been ported
yet, including piding and skype-wrapper. Porting applications is tracked
