12.04.2 with the AMD drivers here also, leave machine running a few days
while I am away and compiz will be using more than 1/2 the 16Gb Ram.

I have the exact same problem on 12.04 (with nvidia drivers) and its
usually triggered when switching from one virtual desktop to another.
It sometimes happens when simply moving a window and freezes during the
wobbly windows animation. Only way out is to do a unity --replace .

Compiz is using more than 400 MB memory instead of ~ 50-100.
I wil try to log into gnome classique or shell

much memory but does not leak so much.

I have the same problem with the NVidia drivers (same version): when I
switch from one screen to one other, or if I suspend and wake the
laptop.

Thanks for your bug report. Unfortunately without more detailed
information we have no chance of identifying the source of the leak.
It's often the unityshell plugin and/or other libraries loaded by Unity
so I've added Unity to this bug.
One thing you can do is to identify if the problem is
