Public bug reported:

I have a dell xps m1710 laptop, which has the ability to output digital
coax spdif through either the extra pin on the s-video or the dell
d-docking station spdif connection. This works in windows, so it's not a
problem with the docking. With the intel-hda driver, the spdif output
does not work. There is an iec958 switch in the mixer, but this seems to
toggle the docking station's headphone jack on and off, instead of
enabling/disabling the spdif output as one would expect. When using the
docking headphone jack, the laptop speakers are not turned off, and the
volume cannot be changed (fixed volume). The headphone jack on the
laptop does turn of the laptopspeakers when used, and reacts to the
normal volume controls.

This is on a feisty beta which has been upgraded from edgy (where the
docking headphone didn't work at all).
