I just patched my Firefox to disallow this annoying behaviour. On OS X,
unfortunately, but the patch should be similar on Windows, although the
paths will differ. Used Midnight Commander to edit inside omni.ja, which
is a plain Zip archive.

Yeah this is so lame. It's hard to believe they're willing to let this
bug go for two release cycles. Maybe I'll need to start using Firefox 18
alpha...

In short, it is a confirmed bug for Firefox 16 and is confirmed to be
fixed in Firefox 18.
Do I need to revert to Firefox 15 to address the bug? This one is

browser.tabs.warnOnOpen is the wrong preference. I've got no idea what
the you've set the correct preference to, as you didn't report your bug
with Apport (as requested in the bug reporting guidelines -
