Daniel described - every time I used openOffice writer it covered up the
gnome panels, like it was in fullscreen mode but the openOffice menus
are still available. This was quite troublesome because I couldn't see

Does hitting 'alt' then going over to the menu where 'Full Screen'
option and selecting it help fix the problem?

I got this same bug recently. It appeared when I changed my Gnome top
and bottom panels to autohide. Changing them back to normal didn't
remove the bug. The problem only occurs with Writer, not Calc.
I got it fixed when I removed
~/.openoffice.org2/user/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office/Writer.x

Daniel,
Probably something in the OpenOffice configuration directory got
corrupted. I am closing this bug now but feel free to reopen or to file
a new bug if you can recreate the issue without using the old
configuration directory.

Yes, if I copy back the former openoffice settings. I just removed the
whole folder and that solved the problem. Should I compress and attach
the settings folder? It is 12 MB compressed.
