I haven't seen this issue for more than a year.
I applied all disable plymouth solutions I found on the web back then,
though.

MMlosh, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
note: I haven't observed this *so far*(statistically insufficient) with Raring
and kernel 3.8.0-19-generic.
X11 #0 always ends up on VT8, though (and X11 #1 on VT9)

I tried to run the mainline kernel for testing another bug on another machine
and it behaves rather funny.
( see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1155926/comments/4 )
I'll attempt to reproduce this bug on hardware+system I don't care
about.

I am unable to test with the mainline kernel.
The mainline kernel package is not signed
and kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9-rc1-raring/ doesn't seem to
support HTTPS.

I think I can do that.
How do I verify the package's integrity?
The KernelMainlineBuilds page does not tell and the download page doesn't even
seem to support https.

Update: Well, it could support https, but I am getting a timeout.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.9 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both
the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.
If this bug is fixed in the
Still an issue in 12.04 Raring.
Logging out and back on on VT7 usually unblocks VT switching.

I am unable to run apport (to get my sound configuration published as requested)
It's broken on Raring. ( #1150335 )
I browsed syslog dmesg for any interesting info and found none.
I'll attach the actually necessary info as soon as requested.

Sometimes it magically self-unlocks after some time, but sometimes
doesn't.
It's a blocker, but obviously there aren't many people running around
with plymouth and failsafe boot delay disabled

Grrr.. something updated, now forcing ureadahead to reprofile doesn't
help :(

Tried removing /var/lib/ureadahead/*pack to force ureadahead reprofile

RESULTS:
When ureadahead is reprofiling, the issue doesn't occur.
I don't point at ureadahead in any way, it probably just plays a role in some
sort of race condition.

Sorry, it was only a random win as I rebooted.
(Or related to the fact that boot after boot-time package update differs from
other boots, namely ureadahead gets reprofiled., maybe way more stuff)
I tried rebooting several times this time.. No luck, stuff stuck on VT
switching syscall, including
thanks, closing

Huh?
I ran apt-get update upgrade.
Tried to reboot (it hang, presumably doing a VT switch. Had to sysrq+REI (said
it's disabled) and SUB(worked)
Either fixed, but the only package that could have done that is plymouth, other
packages that updated weren't relevant.
Or it's a race condition and
correction: not plymouth. upstart it was!
