step is to perform a reverse upstream kernel bisect, from Ubuntu kernel
3.2.0-32-generic (based on upstream 3.2.30) to upstream kernel

Just installed and booted with mainline kernel. I got an error during
installing[1], but it still started. The graphics were crappy (low
resolution on Nvidia GTX 560 TI, minimal VGA driver or something, like i
have it during normal booting until the login screen pops up.) Otherwise
it worked fine.
