I have solved it by installing nouveau drivers and running in classical
gnome window manager. Possible problem was most likely my dual screen
configuration.

It turns out my problem is that I have a Radeon 3000 series video card.
It's only 2 years old but apparently has been deemed "legacy" and is no
longer supported by official packages. The instructions here solved my

Yes, thank you, that has fixed the main problem (window manager and
unity interface).
NB however that I couldnt get bumblebee from the rep that you quoted,
but rather the one quoted on their website.

I had the same problem.
it ended up being a problem with the nvidia driver (I have nvidia Geforce GT
540M)
solved it by install bumblebee:
sud apt-get remove nvidia-current
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia

Sorry, I wasn't a hundred percent clear: on top of having no bars on top
and left, I have no "close" "minimise" and "maximize" buttons on my
applications. These are functions that I believe are associated with the
window manager, which is why I mention it.
