I have a similar problem. If I install the fglrx or fglrx-update
proprietary ATI Radeon driver, I'm able to log in but Unity doesn't
load. Removing the proprietary driver fixes the issue.
This is the output of lspci -v | grep vga
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD]
Philip Goh, if you have a bug in Ubuntu, could you please file a new report by
executing the following in a terminal:
ubuntu-bug fglrx-installer

Only added bug task for linux to easily get full logs, will delete task
after apport-collect'ed.

It's a ATI Radeon HD 7700M.
Actually, I found that I'm running Intel (i915) driver for acceleration
(my video setup is hibryd - it's a notebook with onboard and dedicated
cards). The FOSS driver (radeon) is detected by Xserver, but
acceleration got disabled (I guess my card isn't supported).
