I booted an Ubuntu 10.04.4 LiveCD and inserted a 2GB SD card and it was
recognized and opened a windows displaying the card's contents. Then I
inserted a 8GB MicroSD with an adapter and it was not recognized and
yielded the same results as before.

I installed http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-

I do no recall precisely in which kernel version the recognition of the
SD was successful. I think it was probably linux-image-3.0.0-21-generic
or linux-image-3.0.0-22-generic for oneiric. I have uninstalled those
two versions and currently have version 24 - 26-generic installed.
