Solved by simply switching to the X.Org X server Nouveau display driver.
This does not let me use my video card to it's fullest, and there may be issues
when Steam finally ports to Linux, but that's something I can look at later.

screen blanker activates after 10 mins of inactivity
To manage
I hadn't changed any settings since I upgraded. The old settings were
set never to turn off screen or to activate a screen saver or blanker.
I happily manage that manually.
