After some more testing with the new kernel I've noticed that the
problem appears to be with the properitory ATI driver, since I tested
the latest kernel with and without the driver. Without the driver, the
laptop does not freeze (the same is also true for the current 12.04
kernel). With the driver

to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.8 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both
the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.
