do your desktop have any internal speaker ?
for those motherboard with 6 channels and three jacks (green blue and
pink) at rear panel
headphone have to share DAC with green jack at rear panel
there should be no headphone volume control

Oh, also, I can play music with the root user i.e.:
sudo mplayer *
But this works only with the alsa utilities, and not with pulseaudio.
